Guest Review: ‘A Day Mountain Biking in Tignes

Guest Review: ‘My favourite day in Morzine last summer

New to biking? We’ll get you started…

Biking in the French Alps is a fantastic adventure for all ages and abilities with hundreds of miles of tracks and trails along the valley floor and at higher altitudes using the ski lift system which has been especially adapted for bikes.

All of our resorts have easy-cruising trails, family routes and cross country trails for all ages which are great fun on our free-use mountain bikes. Then, as you progress - you can move on to more technical trails using the lifts and full-suspension bikes you can rent in resort.

Top Tip: In Tignes, we offer a free biking lift pass!

Downhill Biking

The Alps are famous for Downhill biking and many of us aspire to riding the lift-assisted trails on a Pro-bike and all resorts have hundreds of Km’s of dedicated trails with banked corners, humps, bumps, rollovers and jumps. Riding the DH trails is an experience you will find hard to beat and often reserved for experienced riders only…

Not anymore! We’ve teamed up with MTB experts Evo 2 to create a beginner lesson and an intermediate DH lesson in Tignes so you can learn how to use these trails safely.

Top Tip: You can rent a full suspension bike in resort; or bring your own bike to France, (carriage of bikes is free on our transfers). A ‘full-suspension’ bike will allow you to explore the higher terrain using the lift system.

Lifts & Trails

  • Morzine: 800km of trails
  • Bike Lift pass: £37/day
  • June to Sept
  • Tignes & Val d'Isère: 320 km of trails
  • Bike Lift pass: FREE with Active Pack
  • June to Sept

Morzine is part of the vast Portes du Soleil which spans into Switzerland and a well-known bike destination with 25 lifts for bikers and walkers. Tignes and Val may have a smaller area but the quality of trails is excellent and (more importantly) there are fewer people - so the trails are quieter.

Both resorts suit dedicated bikers and experts alike, but in Tignes we have the best facilities for Beginner and Improver DH riders with our special DH MTB lessons that we have designed with local professionals Evo 2.

Top Tip: Beginner and Improver Downhill riders will enjoy our lessons and the trails in Tignes.

Our Bike Hosts & Guided Bike Rides

Our Bike hosts are important members of our team. Their role is to help you make the most of the area (on two wheels) and to ensure your bike is professionally maintained and rolling smoothly all week. They will help get you orientated, find the best trails and give you route cards with ride suggestions.

We can organise professionally guided bike rides for all levels, beginner to expert. It’s also a great way to get an introduction to using the lifts and trails at altitude if you’re new to riding the Alps

Top Tip: Guided rides are free to our guests in Tignes at The Tetras Lodge.

Free-use bike fleet - Specialized

We have a large range of bikes from leading brands like Specialized which are free to use with all our holidays, so you can grab a bike from our racks and go for an adventure. There’s plenty of bikes to go around and we have bikes of all sizes and kids bikes too.

Our bikes have front suspension and disc brakes. They will soak up the valley floor trails and the gentlest of high altitude runs, but only the ones we indicate on our Route Cards. Our bikes are well set up and maintained by our own team of mechanics.

Top Tip: We offer free-use of E-bikes in Hotel Tetras, Tignes and Hotel Christiania, Les Gets

Family and Beginner Rides

Families are in for a real treat! Explore an array of alpine tracks and trails that lead through forests, alongside rivers and even a few up at altitude. We have a couple of family trails that even use the lifts so everyone can experience riding at altitude.

The local biking routes offer a spectacular day out, with lake-side stopovers for lunch and activities like paddle boarding, zip wires or wild swimming to add spice to the adventure. Families with minimal off-road riding experience can explore a plethora of ’family bike routes’ that our reps will show you. After all that’s what they’re there for!
