Self Drive to the Alps

You can self-drive to all of our holiday destinations and driving to the Alps is not as far as you might think. It’s also a great way to experience France and see some spectacular sights on route; avoiding the airports and bringing as much luggage as you like. We have free parking at all our properties (or nearby) and you can save on the cost of your flights and come and go from the resort with the minimum of hassle and on your own agenda. See fly or drive cost  comparison.

Why we drive

  • From Calais, it’s an 8 hour drive to Morzine
  • Driving can be cheaper than flying - Cost of Fly vs Drive
  • A car of 4 will reduce emissions by 65% (Versus flying)
  • Bring as much luggage as you like
  • Free parking in resort
  • The flexibility of a car in resort
  • Travel at your own agenda (Eurotunnel runs every 30 mins)
  • Stay an extra day in resort

Flexibility, Cost Savings & Fewer Carbons

Driving to the Alps is not as far as you might think (about 8 hours from Calais) . You can travel at your own agenda and not be tied to costly flights and luggage restrictions. You’ll also save £’s over flying (which is useful) even if there’s just two of you!

Furthermore, for a car of 4 passengers, you can reduce your carbons by more than 65% when compared to flying, according to web-based carbon calculators.

Having a car in resort

We don’t think that you really need a car in resort, but having one gives you more flexibility to explore the region, for instance, it’ll make a day trip to Chamonix or Annecy a nice and easy thing to do. You can also bring your own bike and pretty much anything else you can cram in!

Extend your holiday

You can travel at your own agenda when you drive and although we have fairly rigid check in and out times, arriving early or staying an extra day can give you that one last walk or bike ride before you head home.

A well placed stopover en-route, to or from the Alps will also break up the journey and  you can enjoy one of the many chateaux or gite-style hotels in rural France, which are quite inexpensive and a lovely experience. Why not visit the medieval town of Troyes or Fontainebleau and its palace.

The same great formula when you arrive

Whether you fly or drive, there’s no loss of enjoyment at the other end. You still receive a very warm welcome on arrival and the same beautiful catered chalet or hotel with a package of free activities and our superb mountain team to help you make the most of your week away.

Tips for driving

First, we recommend the Eurotunnel. Trains run non-stop and don’t suffer the same delays as flights. It’s also nice to privately shuttle yourself between home and the door of your chalet without coming into contact with a soul, bar a few loo, coffee and croissant stops en-route!

Second, why not try a stopover en route? France is a beautiful country and since you will drive the breadth of it, why not stop for a night at a lively gite or chateaux? You won’t pay UK prices and the kids will love the adventure.

Third, get a ‘bip and go’ electronic toll payment card. It sits on your windscreen and bills you electronically (you have an online account to view transactions) and allows you to drive through the priority lane and dodge the longer queues that the masses wait in. See bipandgo.

Driving to Morzine

Driving through France is a comfortable journey with lots to see and do along the way. It’s not a difficult drive - about 8 hours on the French side - and easy on young travelers with a number of sights and tourist stops.

Continental motorways are fast and traffic free. Fuel is well priced and there’s plenty of service stations with rest areas and play parks for kids to blow off some steam. The tolls are about €60 in total, but if you aren’t in a rush then take the N-roads - this way you’ll avoid the tolls, enjoy even cheaper fuel and see some stunning countryside.

Once in resort, all our properties have ample parking onsite, or close by.
