Skiing and boarding on a summer glacier is a really fun experience and the snow conditions can be just as good as they are in April - even with fresh snow on occasions. You may not have as many runs open, but it is far less busy (than winter) and a really unique experience in T-shirts when the sun is out.
4* hotel in beautiful Tignes Les Brevieres

Learn MoreThe glacier is open from mid-to-late June - and through to the end of July/early August, conditions permitting. You will have about 7 or 8 runs open, and 3 or 4 lifts. The snow is always in good firm shape in the morning and then gets slushy by midday. Most stop skiing around this time and retire to the Panoramic restaurant for lunch or coffee, cake and the best view in the Alps at 3,000m.
We think that when the glacier is open (in early summer) it provides almost the perfect active holiday. The glacier opens at 7am (just before in fact) and so you can pack a lot into your day with an early ski or board in the morning, followed by a resort activity in the afternoon such as tennis... mountain biking... climbing... paddleboarding… or just enjoying the hot alpine sun that Tignes is famous for.
Tignes is home to the best ski-able glacier in Europe. It is open until August. The slopes are open from about 7am to 1pm which is more than enough time to enjoy the snow and tire yourself out! There’s up to 25 Km's of slopes open (4-5 runs) and you’ll have the place to yourself (except at weekends) so the snow can be enjoyed for all levels of skier and boarder, with a snow park and jumps open too.
We think it makes for the perfect balance as you can try another activity in the sun for the afternoon. There’s lots going on in Tignes and most activities are included (for free) on the My Tignes card that we give you.
Expect reasonable quality snow in the morning, which will soften quickly. The snow warms and softens nicely through the morning which means you don't need to be on that first lift up! Take it easy instead… that’s what summer skiing is all about!
However, it often snows up top (even in July!) and on some days you can get powdery conditions and even off-piste. Generally, the pistes are easy to ride and there is a beginner green area which is large and pleasant for novice skiers, boarders and families to use.
On arrival in the resort, our Active Team can arrange lift passes and ski or board hire for you. They will help you get fitted for skis, furnish you with a lift pass and get you oriented around the resort - though our hotel is so close to the ski shops and lifts, you’ll not need their help much!
Learning to ski and board in summer is a good time. The slopes are less busy and you don't need so many Kilometres open, so you can save a fortune over learning in winter and frankly skiing and boarding in the sun is a lot nicer!
