Culture sites

Morzine and the Portes du Soleil have some fantastic cultural sites for museum and adventure lovers. Here’s just some of what's in store. Our Active Reps can give walking and biking itineraries (our Route Cards), that will take in many of these sites during a wonderful half day or full day excursion.

The Mechanical Music museum

This is a museum in Les Gets for which a guided tour will take you through the museum and allow you to explore the musical developments through sight and sound.  It’s a unique and interesting alpine experience, clearly great for music lovers and museum enthusiasts, in the centre of Les Gets and in one of the oldest buildings in the town. You will see how instruments work, like gramophones and jukeboxes and see an exceptional collection of limonaires, music boxes, mechanical pianos plus an old workshop of instrument restoration.  It is open every afternoon and guided tours last approximately 1h15

Village of Goats

The Village of Goats is a small mountain hamlet near the lower slopes of Avoriaz and is literally over-run with goats. They amble up and down the main street, regulate the traffic, nose in on your ice cream (they are not shy!) and generally provide a lot of laughter and INSTA material. Around forty goats pace up and down the alleys and claim for affection. The shops sell little paper bags filled with food made for goats.

The village is between Les Lindarets and Lac Montriond and makes for a great lunch or coffee stop during a day out, for example following our Route Card 1, which our reps can give to you on arrival. You will start by taking the Super Morzine and Zorres chairlift, free using your lift pass, and then walk (or bike) for 1hr down into Lindarets and an further 15mins is the Village of goats, then continue your walk or cycle down to Lac Montriond (a further 40 mins). At the lake you can go wild swimming or paddleboarding/kayaking before heading back to Morzine on the free bus.

The Morzine Market

The market is one of the most popular weekly gatherings for locals and, once you are there, you will understand why. Local producers and merchants set up stalls around the Post Office square in the centre of town (carpark) every Wednesday morning. If you miss the Morzine market, you can still go to the Les Gets market the next day, or on Saturday mornings there’s a market in Saint-Jean d'Aulps.

Lac Mines d’Or

This gorgeous alpine lake is located about 15 mins drive from the centre of Morzine, or it’s a lovely walk or cycle to the lake from Morzine centre: along the river and up through the forest and valley. Ask our Reps for the Mines D’Or Route Card. Eat at the Mines d'Or restaurant, go hiking at the Col de Cou near the Swiss border or try any number of other great walking itineraries from this lake. Ask our Reps for the Col de Cou Route card.

The Morzine cheese dairy

This is one of the resort's must-visit places, as it showcases genuine local crafts and knowledge on this traditional industry. Every Wednesday morning, from 9 a.m. (by appointment for groups), the cheese-making site is open to the public and you can attend a guided tour. You can also decide to make a free visit every day between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The site is open all year round and the visit is free.

Morzine Slate Mines

A guided tour of the still active slate mines. Before tourism, slate used to be the main industry and funds provider for Morzine. The area created jobs by quarrying the slate that can still be seen on many of the roofs of chalets today. The slate is known for its high quality.

You can tour the still working mines and learn more about the history of slate and the Morzine mines, a slate worker will guide you around his workshop showing you the techniques he uses for moulding and working with the slate.
