La Plagne benefits from 225km of skiing: over 450km when you include the neighbouring resort of Les Arcs. The Vanoise Express, which connects the two resorts across a vertigo-inducing glacial valley, is the only cable car in the world with a capacity of over 200 people. Together, the two resorts form the ski area ‘Paradiski’, an appropriate name for a ski area with diversity and challenge to rival the legendary Trois Vallees and Espace Killy.
Ski Area
The Paradiski area is particularly excellent for intermediates and experts wanting the variety of la Plagne and Les Arcs. For those who like cruising blue runs, there is a huge selection which will keep you busy for well over a week. Taking the link over to Les Arcs, exhilarating red runs criss-cross the slightly steeper mountain side, and there are plenty of restaurants for a bite to eat or a much needed vin chaud.
Expert skiers are spoilt in La Plagne. Its reputation as a family resort means you can easily find untracked powder even 3 days after a snowfall, unheard of in Chamonix, Tignes or Val d’Isere. If you are looking for a real challenge, book a mountain guide and for the ‘Tarantaise tour’: an off piste itinerary taking a route from La Plagne, through Les Arcs and over to Tignes in one day.
Apres ski
It is fair to say that the nightlife in La Plagne is more subdued than that you might find in Val d’Isere, Les Deux Alpes or Meribel. However, in the five 5 linked villages (Aime 2000, Belle Plagne, Plagne Centre, Plagne Soleil/Villages and Plagne 1800) there is certainly a wide variety of bars and restaurants to choose from. We would recommend ‘La Mine’ in Plagne 1800 for live music, ‘Scotty’s’ in Plagne Centre for that well deserved apres-ski beer, and ‘Le Saloon’ in Belle Plagne for those who want to party the night away! The best food is without doubt to be had in ‘L’Arlequin’, located in Aime 2000 (lift accessible from Plagne 1800): this fabulous little restaurant offers great French and Savoyarde fare, with extra touches such as hand-flaming your crème brulee at the table.
Next year is predicted to be a great season: why not take advantage of the snow in La Plagne? You won’t regret it! See Ski Holidays La Plagne for more information
