The French Alps is a vast area of mountainous terrain stretching from Chamonix on the boarder of Switzerland and Italy, down through the Tarantaise to the Southern Alps near Briançon and Montgenève. Each region of the French Alps has a lot of skiing to offer, and each region has its own unique character. Haute Savoie/ The Northern Alps
On the borders of Switzerland and Italy, this region has some of the most rugged mountain scenery you are likely to experience, and astonishingly varied skiing. Try Chamonix, with more off-piste than you can shake a stick at, and incomparable views of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. For the beginner or intermediate skier, Alpine Elements’ favourite resorts Morzine and Les Gets are an excellent choice, with wide open pistes to gain confidence in those first turns.
Tarantaise Region, Savoie
This is the home of all the big name resorts in French Alpine Skiing. Three huge interconnected regions battle it out for the tourist dollar. Espace Killy (Val d’Isere and Tignes) has possibly the best off piste in the world and a fabulous snow record. The Three Valleys (Meribel, Courchevel, Val Thorens) is a vast playground for intermediates with over 650km of piste. Finally amongst the giants, Paradiski (La Plagne and Les Arcs) is a slightly cheaper destination with tonnes of skiing for all levels, popular with families. As well as the large resorts, you can also find tranquil ski havens such as St Foy, a pretty and traditional French town with lots of rarely frequented off-piste descents, and La Rosiere, which has plenty of wide open runs that are great for family ski and beginner ski. You can find great value accommodation in each of these resorts with Alpine Elements.
Southern Alps
If you like your skiing holidays to involve a decent splash of après-ski, skiing the southern French Alps may well be for you. Alpe D’Huez is known as the Island in the Sun, with more days of sun per year than any other resort, so you’re sure to come home with a tan, as well as good memories of the many bars and restaurants which abound in the resort. Try Chalet Alaska, Alpe d huez for great value accommodation in the heart of the resort. For a real party atmosphere, neighbouring Les Deux Alpes has more bars than any other French ski resort, alongside a decent high-altitude ski area guaranteeing excellent snow cover.
Wherever you choose to stay, skiing the French Alps is certainly the best cure for those British winter blues. Book now, for these popular resorts are sure to book up early, credit crunch or not…
