Most premium ski resorts in France are located within easy reach of the UK. In fact it is perfectly possible to reach many top ski resorts just 4 hours after departure from a UK airport, see our ski travel page. Convenience skiing and close proximity to home are key to any successful family ski trip or ski weekend, not to mention high on the agenda of many a modern day eco-skier or budget conscious snow hound!
France has always been seen as the creme of European skiing, with resorts that are traditionally more expensive than its Italian or Swiss neighbours. However prices have corrected themselves over recent years, and with the rise in demand of budget ski holidays, (which came shortly after the birth of the budget airline), skiing in France has never been more affordable.
Many skiers are now switching from Eastern Block cheap and Italian snow uncertainly to the good-time- guarantees they can expect in France where the snow quality is assured and the resorts have an elegant and stylish charm that simply cannot be found anywhere else in Europe.
Ski TignesTignes is one of France's most popular destinations, and whilst it may not be the cheapest or the prettiest - it is most certainly the highest and most snow sure in Europe. With a summer ski programme that out paces most winter programmes in Eastern Block or Spanish resorts - Tignes is firmly regarded as one of the mightiest ski destinations in France. Ski La PlagneAnother favourite among British skiers is the resort of La Plagne with its snow sure slopes and unrivalled variety. Well kept slopes and excellent ski schools are a testament to the quality of skiing in France.
La Plagne is linked to Les Arcs and forms part of France's 4th largest ski area. The certainty of high altitude snow sure slopes and its all-round appeal bring La Plagne devotees from hard-core ski-bums to couples and family skiers back every year. See Ski Holidays La Plagne for more
Ski Les ArcsLinked to neighbouring La Plagne, Les Arcs is a real all-rounder and France's 4th largest ski area (Paradiski). Perfect for all levels and family ski trips it is hard to find fault with this high altitude ski resort that gets great snow from early December to May. Les Arcs 1950 is a mock-Canadian ski village built in 2004 by Intrawest that lends a real diversity and an extra bit of interest to an already great resort. See Ski Holidays Les Arcs for more
No listing for skiing in France would be complete without a reference to Morzine. Morzine is very traditional ski village that has grown from a farming community since the 1950's. The locals are very pleasant and the atmosphere family friendly with beautiful chalet style architecture, great restaurants and a wealth of excellent skiing. As part of the Portes du Soleil - Morzine offers 650 kms of skiing, the largest ski area in France and facilities for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers than will put most US resorts to shame.
