Val d’Isére is justly famous for its huge network of pistes for intermediates and perhaps the best off-piste in Europe. However, there are areas here suitable for beginners too. From the village there are three free ski lifts (two chair lifts and one drag lift) which are marked black and yellow on the map. These access green runs and will be where your ESF instructor is likely to take you on your first day.

In Val d’Isére, you’ll find the terrain encourages you to progress quickly onto the more challenging runs on the mountain itself. An Espace Killy pass is great value for intermediates, as it is only a small amount more than a local lift pass and will allow you to access the ‘Ski Tranquil’ (peaceful skiing) area at the top of the Olympic or ‘Bellevarde’ lift. Those who aren’t quite confident enough to ski a red run can also catch this lift down at the end of their days skiing.
