Flaine has a remarkable snow record largely due to an obscure "rain shadow" that sits over the valley and creates heaps of snow in winter. So remarkable is this shadow - that Flaine will often get rather more snow than its close neighbour Chamonix which also has an excellent snow record in its own right.
Flaine is connected to neighbouring Samoens and part of the excellent Grand Massif ski domain which offers a very respectable 280 kms of piste - certainly more than enough to satisfy those with an appetite to cover many miles of varied skiing during their week away.
The resort is quite purpose built - but fear not, any profane concrete structures are smothered in lashings of snow! The purpose built nature of the resort also means that many properties are ski-to-door and the ski lift system is well thought out, fast and very efficient - meaning you get more ski time for less waiting! If you like statistics - the 80 lifts that make up the Grand Massif are capable of lifting 75,000 skiers per hour!
Ski FlaineFlaine has some great skiing for intermediate and advanced skiers with plenty of challenging runs and powder opportunities. Around 35% of the resort is tree-lined, so skiers have some interesting and diverse terrain which also provides a perfect contrast for when the weather comes in.
Beginner skiing in Flaine is also well facilitated with an easy network of green and blue runs served by charlifts (rather than drag lifts) and g ood quality skiand snowboard schools.
Aside from excellent powder and freeride slopes, Flaine has a board park with half pipe, jumps and small rails with an open air sound system to keep the adrenaline pumping! Again - as with most resorts, you will find jumps of all sizes so the beginners are fine to have a go.
You will certainly not be disappointed with Flaine for your ski holidays! Flaine is spread over 3 resorts or levels which are all connected by lifts and accessible by foot. It is a car-free resort and thus makes it safer and more pleasant to stay in. Flaine has an interesting array of bars from pizzerias to snack cafes and sit down - more formal - restaurants. Late night bars, clubs and pubs keep the apres skiers happy.
