Avoriaz is next door to the very popular and pretty resort of Morzine, and is in the centre of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area - offering over 650kms of pisted trails, and a superb network of blue and red ski slopes extending over into Switzerland for added variety and style!
Alongside the mighty resort of Chamonix, Avoriaz is the closest high altitude resort to Geneva airport. At 1800 metres it is positively swamped in snow all season long - in part due to its northerly location, (most northern resort in France), and of course due to its abundance of high-altitude ski slopes. Avoriaz is just over 1.5 hours from Geneva, thus perfect for ski weekends and family ski holidays.
Skiing in AvoriazAvoriaz and the Portes du Soleil encompass the well known resorts of Chatel, Morzine, Morgins and Les Gets alongside seven other smaller resorts to make one of the most appealing and diverse ski areas in Europe. Skiers will find a huge variety of terrain suited to all levels and everything from wide motorway pistes to beautiful tree lined descents, and of course enough terrain to always find somewhere to escape the crowds.
Try the run known locally as the "Star Wars" run from Avoriaz down to the bubble lift at Ardent. This is an easy blue slope that winds its way through trees and culminates in a wider blue leading down to the small hamlet of Ardent. Even when the main resort seems desperately busy in peak season, the Star Wars run is one of many easily found runs to escape the crowds.
Chatel, Linga and Super Chatel offer some wonderful skiing and the area is just two chairlift rides away from the main restaurant bowl in Avoriaz. Great snow and pockets of un touched powder are regularly found.
Snowboard roots are very firm in Avoriaz history. Avoriaz was one of the first resorts to adopt the sport back in the early '90s and since then has kept right on top of its facilities - proudly boasting some of the best parks and pipes in France.
The Free-riding is also excellent and there are plenty of hits, banks, roll overs and fun terrain to excite any level of rider. In short - a real all-rounder with a great vibe for visiting boarders.
Lots of powder opportuities are available and when the local runs get tracked then try the Swiss side for some fresh snow. If you are first up the lifts then get straight up to the top of the Arare (express chairlift to 2800m) and then turn right and you have smooth powder runs all the way down to the Cable car at Les Prodains. Approx 15 mins of unadulterated fresh snow and powder descents (or piste descents for the non powder-hounds).
Avoriaz is a car-free resort built high up on a cliff that overlooks the Morzine valley below. The architecture is tall and has an almosy craggy effect so as to try and blend in with the mountain upon which it sits. The buldings are largely clad in wood and the resort always covered in los of snow. Nightlife is varied and quite French. Good restaurants and cafes are also in ready supply.
