Skiing in March

march skiing GREAT SNOW!

March offers excellent snow conditions, (some of the best all season) and lots more sunshine and pleasant ski weather than earlier season dates.

The snow is still cold and dry and conditions are very good. March however is fast becoming the most popular time of year to ski as people try to avoid the congested month of February and the French and British school holidays.

March is also a great time for Family Ski Holidays, and we are finding that parents are making use of thier one or two week allowance to take children out of school in term time to make use of cheaper ski holiday prices. Some schools often allow this if the reason is educational or a worth while experience.

SNOW IN MARCH

Snow records show that March 14/15th (week equivalent) has been consistently the best week for snowfall during the last 5 years. Providing more than 43cms of fresh snow  over this one week (on average) in all French resorts above 1050 metres.

A SEASONAL SHIFT

We have seen a slight shift in the start of the winter ski season over the past decade, and the snow tends to now be arriving later in December, (mid December to be exact). There was a time when we used to get the first base layer around mid to late November, with huge dumps of snow always falling in early December.

However the late start to the season nowadays has consistently brought about a late end to the season too. Snow is indeed staying much later in the season, and nowadays we are seeing huge dumps of snow at the end of March and going well into April. The seasons maybe starting a touch later - but they are are lenthening significantly too!

March Ski Facts

march skiing

March skiing has it all: long days of sunshine, excellent snow conditions and plenty of space on the piste.

The snow is historically at its best in late March when the penultimate snow dumps of the season arrive, with a powder aplenty at all altitudes! It is a great time of year to explore the sunny resorts of Meribel, Les Gets, or Courmayeur near Chamonix, and go home with a tan to match your new-found skiing skills. The snow falls fast and light at this time of the year, ensuring the pistes are topped up with new snow and the off-piste affords the experienced skier many opportunities to perfect their powder-skiing technique.

In March, you can enjoy lovely relaxing days of skiing in the sunshine, punctuated with a coffee or a cold beer on the terrace of one of France’s famed mountain restaurants. At the end of the day’s skiing, make time for an après ski drink or two. At this time of year, slope-side bars often have live bands on their terraces from about 4pm, which makes for a great atmosphere. Highly recommended for this is the ‘Rond-Point’ in Meribel, also known as the ‘Roni’, which has live music every day from 4.30 – 7.30pm as well as a great selection of drinks and snacks.

March is also a fantastic time of year to take advantage of cheap ski deals offered by tour operators. You can go for a late deal, which can offer a bargain, but these sometimes mean missing out on the highest quality or best located accommodation. A better idea is to choose the accommodation you like from the internet or the brochure, and take advantage of the off-peak season prices whilst making sure you stay in the best places possible. At this time of year you can travel with the utmost of confidence knowing you will arrive into a well organised resort in which the staff are old hands at their jobs and will ensure your ski stay is one to remember.

Given the general lack of ski deals around this winter we would advise moving quickly as these deals may not return!
