For the connoisseur, January is quite simply the best time for your skiing holiday. The snow is at its best, the pistes are quiet and the prices are more reasonable. In January, all French resorts will be fully open for business: try Meribel, for fantastic access to the huge Three Valleys ski area, or La Plagne, with its wide open runs and rarely-frequented off-piste. Alternatively, for a lively town atmosphere, try Chamonix; or take your holiday in Tignes for almost limitless powder snow at this time of year.
Remember, January is the coldest month of the year in the Alps, so it is important to bring the right clothes to keep you warm and toasty up on the slopes. You’ll need a base layer (thermal top and bottoms), a mid layer (fleece or soft shell) as well as your ski jacket and trousers. Also vital are insulating gloves and goggles, to keep any wind-blown snow out of your eyes. If all of this sounds a bit too cold for your liking, try taking your January ski holiday in Alpe D’Huez. Known as the ‘Island in the Sun’, the south-facing slopes of this resort in the Southern Alps will ensure you never get too chilly, and you might even go home with a tan!
With all this snow about, remember to go fully equipped if you are venturing off-piste: you’ll need a transceiver, shovel and probe and for most excursions it is advisable to hire a mountain guide, who will ensure you find the best snow as well as keeping you safe. For those freestyle skiers and boarders among you, by January the snow parks will all be up and running, perfect for practising those tricks. Recommended is the Burton Stash Park in Avoriaz – part of the Portes du Soleil ski area linked to Les Gets and Morzine.
Self Drive
The flexibility of driving to the alps will give you an extra 2 days on the slopes, and save your group up to £100p/per - esp over peak dates! Groups of 4 can save by taking a car to resort. Drive time is approx 8 hours on the french side, tolls cost £30 and Ferry tickets start at £70 return. Fuel is usually a touch cheaper than UK pump prices. Two fill ups should get you there!
Family Liftpass
Family passes in Meribel & Chamonix can save you up to £30 a head
Pre-book Ski Hire
We are currently offering huge savings for pre-booked skis and boards, which means skis and boots cost from just £69 & £44 for children. Check out our Ski Hire deals.
Cheaper Insurance
Don't pay over the odds for a winter sports policy, but at the same time - ensure you are fully covered for your trip. Ours costs just £29 for peace of mind and includes (subj. to terms) airlifts, offpiste and on piste rescue, mountain rescue, repatriation & cancellation.
Don't risk it - Book a Package!
If you want total holiday security then don't be tempted to DIY your holiday and book flights separately. Airline failure will mean you lose the cost of your flight and have the extra replacement cost of finding a new one. However if you book a flight inclusive package with a Holiday Company that has an ATOL license (ours is ATOL 6435) your monies will always be protected.
Book late
You always get good deals if you book late. However you will likely be lumped with a low altitude B-rated resort, as all the high altitude stuff gets snapped up nowadays. Is it worth the risk in the current warmer climate?
Ski Conditions
January always gets the benefit of the first fresh snowfalls of the season. The temps are colder and thus the snow is dryer and in very healthy shape, allowing skis to grip more. January also benefits from crowd free slopes.
Beginner Skiers
This is great news for beginners too. Crowd free slopes will allow beginners to learn in a stress free atmosphere. The learning curve is further enhanced with cold, dry snow which stays in better shape.
Remember to add the airfuel and ensuite supls (if required)
And there is no free wine with the Hotels Bdn and Chamois
