A French ski chalet is a great choice for a relaxing ski holiday. Most French ski chalets are offered on a fully catered basis: you’ll get a continental breakfast (sometimes with a cooked option – check the terms and conditions for more details), afternoon tea with a cake on your return from the slopes and a three course evening meal with wine. Alpine Elements prides itself on offering good quality home-cooked food without attempting to re-create any Michelin-starred menus. After skiing all day, you’ll be craving tasty food and lots of it!
There are several types of typical French Ski Chalet. Firstly you have the traditional wooden free-standing chalet, which is probably the picture most people have in their head when they think of a ski chalet holiday. These are very picturesque and quaint, and can be quite quirky, with overhead beams, wooden carving and bright furnishings being typical. Chalets of this type do tend to have quite small rooms: this is simply because land is at a premium in French ski resorts. The most successful holidays in these chalets are had by those who accept the quirks of the accommodation and embrace the boutique or period features. We recommend: Chalet Well, Morzine.
An alternative is a chalet-apartment. These are most common in purpose built ski resorts such as Les Arcs, La Plagne and Tignes. They will usually have larger rooms than a traditional stand alone chalet, and may feel more spacious. They are also likely to be more modern in their décor. Many of these apart-chalets in resorts such as Tignes and Val Thorens are also ski-to-door. However, they will certainly lack some of the quaint and picturesque look of the typical French ski chalet. We recommend: Chalet Altitude in Les Arcs 2000 with Alpine Elements.
Finally, the crème de la crème of French ski chalets: the luxury ski chalets. Nowadays, with celebrities such as Kylie and Richard Branson holidaying in the French Alps, it is not surprising that the ultimate in luxury isn’t hard to find here if you can afford it. However, little extras such as a hot tub, swimming pool, sauna or Wifi and Sky TV don’t have to come at huge cost. Try an Alpine Elements ‘Gold’ chalet for a little bit of extra comfort at a sensible price. We recommend: Chalet Caroline, Tignes Les Brevieres.
If you’ve never been skiing before, take our word for it and don’t even think about going self-catered. You’ll need all your energy for hitting the slopes hard during the day, and why slave over a hot stove when your fully trained chalet host can take care of it all for you, while you relax and take in the atmosphere. With ski chalets available at fantastic prices for Winter 2009-10, why wait a second longer?
