Many chalets and apartments operate on a self catered basis. Cooking for yourself is not that expensive, and when you share the catering it can be very sociable. Most skiers will manage all their meals in a ski resort for just £70 per person (a week) or £150 for a family of 4.
Food is readily available from resort super markets and all chalets and apartments will come fully equipped for self catering with all the pots and pans, you will need ; and of course a fridge, freezer, oven, hob and microwave. Be prepared for an odd mix of crockery, (especially in ski apartments), but that often adds to the adventure of self catering and appeals to one's innovative nature. Making your favourite family dish in a small caravan-style kitchenette can be a mammoth task after a full days skiing.
Self catering is not often a problem with families used to mum cooking, and can of course be very sociable with ski groups, where party members share mealtimes and cook for each other. Some groups nominate a "chalet chef" for their week, and he or she may be let off paying their share of the food.
Cleaning for yourselves
Do remember that when you go self catered , you will not have a chalet girlor boy to run around after you! You have to clean for yourself, make beds, mop floors and empty the bins! This may seem easy enough on the outset, but coordinating folk in a larger ski home to "do their bit" may not be that easy and can easily sour a special ski holiday. Ensuring your house mates stick to a rota, let alone cooking a meal for 10 fellow skiers can be the cause of many an upset after a hard day's skiing, so beware!
Of course if you do not want the hassles of cooking for yourself then just join one of our catered ski chalets. You will have breakfast, a 3 course evening meal, cakes and tea in the afternoon and beds made daily. Gone are the house chores and skiers can concentrate on doing what they do best - having a good time!
Catered chalets are a great way to do a ski holiday because everyone sits down together and enjoys good food and wine from well trained chalet chefs and hosts. Expect a roaring log fire and a convivial chalet atmosphere in which to enjoy your ski break!
