Snow Report 11.4.2011

Over 30cm are forecast for some of the Alpes’ higher slopes. Easter’s looking good! Look out for those Late Deals if you’ve not already booked!

Clear mornings, with light cloud developing, light winds during the early part of the week. From Wednesday night until Saturday: SNOW, and lots of it! Espace Killy: Val d’Isere 32cm, Tignes 28cm. Chamonix 21cm. Trois Vallees: Meribel 21cm, Val Thorens 29cm. Paradiski: La Plagne 23cm, Les Arcs 24cm. Les 2 Alpes 16cm. Portes du Soleil: Avoriaz 9cm. Cham and Avoriaz may even get some snow from Tuesday. Austrian resorts can expect snow from Tuesday afternoon: St Anton 19cm by Saturday.

Here, Val Thoren’s lift is on the look out for new snow.

Snow Report 28.03.11

Light to moderate snow showers in the French Alps during the early part of this week, followed by a clear and sunny run in for the weekend, look set to make for some excellent conditions. The very lowest areas may see some rain before clearing by midweek, and winds are likely to be no more than light.

Tignes’s upper slopes can expect 20cm of snow by Wednesday. The Paradiski resorts of La Plagne, Les Arcs etc will see similar falls, the Trois Vallees over 15cm, and the Portes du Soleil a slightly lighter snow covering. Les Deux Alpes is forecast 10-15cm, mostly on Tuesday and Wednesday. Chamonix looks like being the big winner with nearly 25cm in the upper areas, and even 15cm around the 2,500m mark. In Austria, St Anton is looking forward to snow showers through to Thursday, before the sun and blue sky skiing takes hold.

Tignes Weather report

Tignes, Val d’isere and the rest of the Espace Killy look set for a bright week ahead, with the possibility of a little snow on Friday afternoon. The Easterly winds will calm down, as they become Northerly by the end of the week. The temperature should not go any higher than -6˚C, and will be quite a bit colder where the wind chill takes effect.

World Cup ski series comes down to the last race

In a real nail bighter of a season, the two dominant women, Maria Riesch and Lindsey Vonn, will battle it out in the last race of the season before the FIS World Cup Women’s Overall Ski Champion is decided.

The Giant Slalom is the race, and the Swiss resort of Lenzerheide is the venue. The somewhat convluted scoring methods, spread over the whole series, depending on how many races a competitor finished, how many podium finishes and so on. The weather, which caused the cancellation of Thrsday’s Super G and Friday’s Men’s G S, could still play it’s part. It has already decided that Ted Ligerty would win the G S by cancelling those races.

French Alps snow report

Early snow showers followed by Spring-like skiing, and more snow on Saturday, should mean a good week ahead. Low temperatures will keep the existing snow in good condition, and help the snow makers do their stuff.

Tignes can expect 5cm of fresh falls on Saturday, further down the valley Ste Foy should see snow showers on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. The Portes du Soleil looks like having some lovely clear, sunny days, with little wind giving some superb skiing conditions. The Trois Vallees (Meribel, Val Thorens, Courchevel), and Paradiski (Les Arcs & La Plagne) areas should see a good few centimeters of new snow on Monday, with up to 5cms on Saturday.

Brit Ski Jumper shown the door

Following in Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards’ ski tracks, James Lambert was hoping for ski-jump glory on the world stage. Looking to compete during the Nordic World Ski Championships on the short hill at the new Holmenkollen jump in Oslo, Lambert was keen to match his 100m practice jumps. However, Yorkshire born Lambert (who now lives in Norway0, was refused access to the hill. The Daily Mail is reporting that it was because of a 57m jump which Lambert did complete, that had to be estimated because it was too short for the usual measuring system!

More snow for the Alps this week

More new snow is expected in the French Alps this week, on top of the weekend’s good dumps. Sainte Foy, Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d’Isere should see an extra 8-11cm by Tuesday afternoon but also light showers in late afternoons and Wednesday night. Some resorts can expect further snow showers around midweek, with clearer skies heading towards the weekend. Temperatures should generally stay low, helping to keep the new snow in good condition. Wind speeds will drop quite dramatically as the weekend approaches, becoming virtually nonexistent in many resorts.

Outsiders triumph at skiing World Championships

Italy’s new ski hero is a 26 year old who has only won a single World Cup race in his entire career. Christof Innerhofer was part of the early draw on the extremely icy, and wickedly fast Kandahar course on Sunday.

The upsets didn’t end with the winner. In second was another early starter, Hannes Reichelt, who ppsted a very quick time that looked as if it may take the gold back to Austria. However, Innerhofer took a mighty 0.6 second bite out of his time. In third place was the Slalom specialist Ivica Kostelic, who professed to hating such fast and icy conditions. The more established Super G racers were headed by Didier Cuch in fourth, but with Miller making a near catastrophic mistake, and Svindal skiing out of the course it was the early birds that got the Super G worm.

Korean resort final hosts World Cup event

After the disappointment of last weekend’s cancelled World Cup Snowboard event, the Korean resort of Yong Pyong was finally able to stage it’s first ever FIS World Cup event. The Austrian team continued it’s domination of the Snowboard Parallel Slalom, with a win in the Women’s and first & second in the Men’s. For Benjamin Karl this was his fourth consecutive World Cup Gold medal, putting him only one behind the current record holder for consecutive wins, Phillip Schoch of Switzerland. Karl also increased his lead after Andreas Prommegger slipped from second to third in the overall rankings with a poor twelfth place finish.
