One of the longest Downhill races in the world, the 20 mile (33 km) Mega Avalanche starts at the top of the Glacier Pic Blanc in Alpe dhuez (3330m) and continues down to Allemont (720m). The festivities last for over a week (July 6-12) during which riders can either take part in the race or just leisure-ride the Alpe d'huez bike trails.
The evenings host many festivities, the most popular of which is the film festival with nightly viewings of the latest Bike Movies.
The Mega Avalanche is social event as much as sporting - which attracts 1800 cyclists and over 40% of whom are British! You don't have to race, indeed - you may just prefer to ride the area's excellent network of bike trails served by the ski lift system.
There are no hard and fast rules or regulations, the event is designed to accommodate as many riders as possible, and those of all fitness levels are encouraged to join in.The only serious requirement isa doctors note and a full suspension bike plus body armour and a full-face helmet!

To qualify for the event, riders must first complete the 15km downhill run. The time in which you finish will determine your space on the starting grid.
The main race begins with a mass start (all at once) which usually ends up with many riders falling over - but mainly due to the snow at the start of the downhill! It may sound nutty, but the comp is open to all levels and there is even a childrens event on the Monday afetr the main week which is a French bank holiday.
