Weekly Snow Report

snow reportWeekly Snow Report
By James Smith, French Office

Heavy snow has been falling all over the Alps, accompanied by temperatures well below freezing, particularly at night.

In the Northern Alps, 20cm fell in Chamonix over the past couple of days, with 10cm coming down in Morzine and Les Gets to add to last week’s significant falls. Cold temperatures are set to remain and further snowfalls are forecast for Friday, with many lifts in Chamonix already running, and the facilities in Morzine and Les Gets opening on Saturday.

In the Tarantaise, the Face de Bellevarde lived up to its fearsome reputation during the FIS World Cup races this week. The most famous piste in the resort of Val d’Isère currently has 80cm of well-groomed snow, in common with the rest of the high altitude resorts at Tignes, Les Arcs and La Plagne. The pistes in Meribel and Courchevel are being sustained by the cold temperatures, with 75cm depth in both valleys and snow showers forecast for the rest of the week. Finally, Sainte Foy opens this weekend, with a good 50cm snow base already laid down and more falls forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
