Transfer day

Transfer day

Who doesn’t love transfer day? I mean, what isn’t to like about getting up at 3.30am and wading through a blizzard on the way to a chalet where the only things to be found are tired guests and an endless list of tasks to be done? It’s not that bad though, because if you work really hard you can get everything done by midday and then have a power nap. Just stretch out on the sofa for half an hour and get that bit of kip that’ll see you through to the end of the day. Bliss.

Phone ringing. It’s the boss.

‘Hello?’ in my most awake voice.

‘Your guests have just left the airport. They’ll be here in two hours.’

Thanks for that. How long was I asleep? Five minutes. Fantastic. Only trouble is I can’t get back to sleep now. Time for another peek at the guest manifest. I look down the list. Fish allergy. Again? I had one of those last week. Time to be creative again.

But transfer day is probably the only low point of the week. Come Monday morning it is business as usual and that’s where the fun begins. Getting to know a whole new group of guests is sometimes testing at first, but by the end of a wine-fuelled evening meal most have come out of their shells and have embraced the atmosphere we present to them.

It is all about getting into a routine – knowing what needs to be done and in what order can save so much time. But flexibility is also vital. Accept that it is not possible to go skiing every day and disappointment won’t come back to bite. Though it is hard to stomach that fact when the sun is shining and the snow is perfect, but Super U have just arrived with an astronomical amount of food. All of which has to be checked and put away.

Yet these are just little things. Five days skiing a week is more than enough. And getting to go out every night is equally fun. The fact that we have no contracted hours is no bad thing – when the job is done, it is done, and the rest is free time. So the better and more efficient we become, the more slope time we get. Can’t complain about that.
