A Great result for Ocean Elements on the Solo Wolf Rock Yacht Race
We’re really pleased to report that Fluke III, the Ocean Elements racing yacht (Jeanneau Sunfast 3200) ) came 3rd in the inaugural Single handed Wolf Rock yacht race which started at 14:00 on Saturday 15th July and finished in the evening of Tuesday the 18th July, 2017. 15 boats entered and only 8 boats completed this hard race.
This was the first ‘Solo Wolf Rock Race’ ever organised, and should become a sailing classic – known for its tricky navigational hazards, tidal gates and long overall distance. It was originally billed as a “Challenging 350 mile solo yacht race” but actually became almost 500 miles due to it being a beat against the wind both ways! Well done James [Hardiman] our MD, and Fluke III…
“It’s great to get a good result after so much hard work and such a long time at sea [almost 4 days]! I really pushed all the way to keep ‘Zest’ sailed by Rupert Holmes [of Yachts and Yachting] behind me, and to keep ‘Tweak’ in sight, a Jod 35 sailed by Richard Breeze. I spent almost 4 days without sleep, match racing against Rupert, who was always very close by. With just a few 10 min cat naps, freeze dry food and chocolate to keep me going for the race – I found it a tough one! I had to constantly work the boat which seemed to pay off so I’m really pleased to get a result after such a long time at sea AND to get one past Rupert who is a great sailor! Fluke seemed to make gains on the heavier beats and then Rupe would always catch up when I dozed! Argh!! I said to myself, I’m gonna have to try harder and STAY AWAKE!! This is a hard thing to do after 3 ½ days of constant sailing and tweaking in tough conditions when you keep falling asleep at the tiller!” – James Hardiman MD Alpine Elements
About the race and sailors:
The Solo Wolf Rock race organised by the Off Shore Solo Racing Club was quite a challenge, emotionally and physically for all competitors! Nigel Colley came first on a Sunfast R2 and Rob Craigie second on Bellino, A sunfast 3600. A great result for these Jeanneau Sunfast race boats!
Competitor boats ranged from ‘Pegasus’ an Open 50 sailed by Ross Hobson and ‘British Beagle’ a Sigma 36 sailed by Ostar sailor Charles Emmett.
Well done to the guys that had to pull out of this race after such a hard start, gear failure and general high winds with nasty seas – it was un surprising the race claimed a few retirements!
