Latest reports, from
the HeraldScotland, now place Snowsport GB’s debt at £600,000. Worse still, there are concerns that the current organisational hiatus is also putting both the British (due to start March 27th – 9th April) and Scottish (from April 6th) Ski Championships in limbo. A decision will not be made until SnowsportGB is formally placed in administration. There is also the small matter of the Winter Olympics, and how the upheavals are affecting the British Olympic competitors. See UPDATE
The uncertainty surrounding the organization, and in light of administration’s possibility, meant that entry fees were not being taken, although Snowsport Scotland was still advertising for entries. However, competitors and their support, as well as supporters had started booking their travel and accommodation. The Scottish organisation appeared frustrated at the pace of progress in finalising the future of SnowsportGB future. For Snowsport Scotland, Ms Rudd claimed that they “…can do nothing until the governing body takes itself into administration. The longer it goes, the less likely we are to have the confidence of the athletes to enter.”
Commenting on the statement by British Olympic Associations Chief Executive, Andy Hunt, that ”The BOA’s absolute priority is to do everything possible to ensure that the athletes are able to compete in the Vancouver Games as members of Team GB.” Ms Rudd was quoted: “The British Olympic Association is trying to hold the sport together, for which Snowsport Scotland CEO Jane Harvey is thankful. “We’re grateful to them for taking this on in the short term, as it secured our athletes’ representation at the Olympics and ensured that non-Olympic athletes could continue to enter races.”
Confusion, however, continues regarding a contact number for the governing body replacing SnowsportGB. The FIS have confirmed that it is “an organisation under the auspices of the BOA.” However, when HeraldScotland tried to phone them, they got through to an alternative energy company, one set up by the BOA Chairman, Lord Colin Moynihan.
No doubt more will unfold as the increasingly bumpy road to the Vancouver Winter Olympics is travelled.
UPDATE: On the 5th February SnowsportGB was put into administration.
