A UK based tour operator has waded into the debate concerning the wearing of ski helmets. The Daily Telegraph is reporting Mr Stuart Bensusan of Essential Travel as stating that: “We are working now to make it a mandatory requirement that customers taking insurance with us know: ‘You must be wearing a helmet or you won’t be covered for head injury.’ Comments were included ‘Health & Safety gone mad’, along with a feeling that the ‘no ski helmet, no head injury insurance’ idea was big business trying to force an issue. This move will no doubt concern those who feel that usage of ski helmets actually increases risk taking; Boris Johnson (Mayor of London): “As the helmets spread from head to head, you can see how otherwise sensible people give way to an irrational misjudging of risk.”
The Ski Club of Great Britain diplomatically called Mr Bensusan’s initiative ‘bold.’ Althought the chairman of BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors), Gareth Roberts, said he personally approved of Essential’s move , adding however that he would not seek to force BASI’s 6,500 members to wear helmets. What do you think?
