Scottish ski slopes would benefit from bubble wrap!

Cairngorm ski area - bubble wrappedA Professor at the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Environment Research Institute has produced research showing that the main Scottish ski resorts would be able to protect their ski season be using the well known packing material.

Noted climatoligist, Professor John McClatchey was able to protect areas from the effects of rising temperatures. Looking at statistics for the CairnGorm ski area show that, over the last 30 years, an average of two days per season are lost to milder winters. Other Scottish resorts such as Glencoe, The Lecht, Glenshee and Nevis range are similarly affected.

Using silver sided bubble wrap would, in Professor McClatchey’s view, allow snow conditions to be preserved for certain peak weekend ski and snowboard periods. The bubble wrap would also counter the effects of high winds, which contribute to snow loss. The Daily Record quotes CairnGorm Mountain’s Colin Kirkwood as believing “We could see it being used on areas which are prone to getting worn away towards the end of the season.” This was backed up by Marian Austin of the Nevis range.
