New indoor slope – longest in the UK

New indoor slope – longest in the UK

Indoor snow slope for Weston?

More information about a new indoor snow slope on a former airfield at Weston-super-Mare are coming to light. thisisBristol website report that the Leisured Dome UK Limited development would be part of a bigger redevelopment of the 386 acre airfield site, including both business park and residential housing projects. Outline planning permission already exists for a new business park and industrial sector, as well as a new access road.

Leisured Dome UK Limited expect the facility to bring in 2.5 million visitors per year. Alongside the snow there appear to be plans for a hotel, ‘Terminal Velocity’ freefall centre, gym, skate park, ice rink, health spa, retail shops and cafés. The project has already received support from Councillors, and a formal planning application is expected to be submitted to North Somerset Council during 2011. However, according to the ‘Leisure Management’ online magazine the company are still “in talks” with the site’s owners Persimmon Homes, and the Council. If planning permission were granted, the ‘Dome could be open in two years. Persimmon have said that they are actually in talks with a number of commercial operators regarding the site’s development.

The slope has been reported as being the longest in the country, at between 180 and 220 meters. However, this compares poorly with proper ‘long’ indoor slopes such as Landgraaf, which is 500m! Further details were available on the Leisure Dome website but have been replaced by an ‘email for information’ type form.
