Another Green Air Tax – Austria

Another Green Air Tax – Austria
Innsbruck Airport

Innsbruck Airport

The pressure on air fares is increasing yet again. In common with certain other European nations, a ‘Green Tax’ is now to be levied by Austria, from January the first 2011. Not only will passengers have to pay when they leave from the UK, but they will now have to pay to leave Austria too.

The tax, as reported by OnTheSnow is pegged at €8 for European shorthaul destinations (the same as Germany), with a higher tax on medium and longhaul flights. The UK levy is 75% higher, at just over €14 (£12). The Austrian taxes are expected to bring in €69 million annually.

Airlines affected by this new tax will include British Airways and EasyJet, who have scheduled services to Innsbruck, as well as various charter companies such as Thomson.
