As a stand alone, one centre ski area Les 2 Alpes punches way above its weight. Having visited three times it’s one of my favourite resorts. These are my recommendations of what not to miss when in Les 2 Alpes:
1. The blacks into town
Les 2 Alpes is an upside down resort with its steepest runs leading into town, including four great blacks – Diable 1 and 2 are quietest. In fresh snow these four runs are great fun and much of the area between them is accessible if you like to venture off-piste.
2. Get high on the glacier
The Les 2 Alpes glacier is open for summer skiing and reaching 3600m provides guaranteed snow and great conditions. Stop for a picture as there are stunning views of Mont Blanc and then enjoy wide cruisy blues. You can ski 2300m down to Mont De Lans at 1300m without catching a lift.
3. It’s well worth the Fee
For good varied reds, blues and blacks head to the Fee area. Fee 3 and 4 from the top of the Fee and Sautet lifts offer long red descents over varied terrain. After fresh snowfall they only bash one side of the piste, leaving plenty of on-piste powder.
4. Thuit Thuit
Thuit 1, from the bottom of Fee to Thuit lift is pretty flat so unless conditions (and you) are very fast it should be avoided on a snowboard. However take Thuit 4 to avoid the slow and busy Jardin 2 cat track. The area under the Thuit Cretes lift is fun when it has snowed.
5. Super Pipe and Park
The park area is extensive and serviced by two chairlifts and a drag. With blue, red and black areas, plus a boardercross, there are plenty of features for everyone from park-virgin to park-rat. On the glacier there is also a super pipe.
6. Off-piste to La Grave
From the top of the glacier you can ski down into La Grave – the legendary unpisted freeride playground. It is signposted but unless you are an experienced backcountry skier you should get a guide – you will need one in La Grave anyway. Be aware the link closes when conditions are poor.
7. Tranquille zone
Beginners, nervous intermediates and families will love the tranquille zone as it removes the stress of idiots bombing past at high speed.
8. Family Fun
Les 2 Alpes has been a Famille Plus resort since 2009. Visit the ice cave, go ten pin bowling, take a sleigh ride, ice skate or toboggan. Plus there are family themed events every evening to keep kids entertained.
9. Pano Bar party
My favourite on piste party in France. Similar to Folie Douce but better. Pumping dance tunes, fancy dress, sunny deck and plenty of revellers make this a must visit for apres fans. It opens from 10am but the party is 3-5 with the option of a gondola ride back if you have drunk too much.
10. Pub crawl and dancing on tables
Les 2 Alpes has one road through town and is almost designed for a pub crawl. Start at the Mont De Lans end of Avenue Du La Muzelle and walk through town ending up in Smithy’s – where table top dancing is compulsory. If you still have the energy hit L’Avalanche Discothèque.
