The Event
We are raising funds for Sail4Cancer whilst competing in the Azores and Back race, (the Azab), which starts on June 5th, 2011. James and Peter Hardiman will be racing the “iGOSKi-Ocean Elements” boat across part of the Atlantic in a bid to raise funds for Sail4Cancer.
The Race
The Azab is a serious Ocean yacht race that covers some 2,500 miles of ocean, approximately 1220 miles on each leg. The majority of yachts usually take between 7 and 10 days to reach the Azores allowing a week to relax, make repairs and restock for the return passage.
The Charity
Sail 4 Cancer is a charity based organisation that aims to improve the quality of life for individuals and their families who have been affected by cancer.
With so many affected by this cruel disease in some shape or form, we are dedicated to making a contribution in whatever way we can.
The prep
Between now (April 10) and June 5, James and Peter still have plenty of prep to do. They will have to ensure that iGOSKi is in tip-top, sea worthy shape, and complies with ISAF offshore rules (a 64 page document). They also have to cram in 3 qualification requirements , keep iGOSKi up with her race calendar, and do a 500 mile qualifier (4-5 days of non stop sailing out of sight of land). Then get the boat to the start line in Falmouth, some 200 miles away.
And all this alongside the daily running of the Company (for James) which is at quite a critical moment as we launch Ocean Elements, (sailing holidays in Greece) which opens to our first guests on May 1st.
James says: “ It’s going to be a tough learning curve for me because although I’ve done a fair amount of offshore sailing in my life, I’ve never crossed and Ocean, let alone raced across one!”
We hope that you feel suitably inspired to donate and help us raise funds for this most worthwhile of charities. You can follow James and Peter’s exploits in the run up and during the race on their blog.
